Zingaro Nature Reserve

Overview

Natural paradise in Sicily

Bays that can only be reached on foot or by boat, clear sea, unspoilt nature, prehistoric caves. The Zingaro Nature Reserve is the wildest part of Sicily, something you don't expect, far from the busy shores and amenities. This oasis of tranquillity stretches between San Vito lo Capo and Scopello and will make you fall in love with it at first sight.

The Reserve can only be explored on foot, either from the northern entrance, at San Vito, or from the southern entrance, at Scopello. Comfortable shoes, food and a good supply of water: inside the oasis, there are no refreshment stations. Choose from five well-marked trekking routes that will take you to spectacular coves where the Mediterranean scrub gives way to crystal-clear waters: Cala Tonnarella, Cala dell'Uzzo, Cala Marinella, Cala Beretta, Cala Disa, Cala Capreria, Cala del Varo. Seek shelter from the heat under the dwarf palms, symbol of the Zingaro, or inside the Uzzo cave, a prehistoric site inhabited since the Palaeolithic period. In between swimming, visit the five museums in the Reserve, dedicated to various traditional activities, from bluefin tuna fishing to giummara weaving.

For an unusual perspective, hire an inflatable boat or book a boat trip. Admiring the Reserve from the sea and reaching the coves by swimming is an experience you will always remember.
