Corso Vittorio Emanuele

Overview

The living room of the city: the elegant Corso Vittorio Emanuele is the main pardonable street of the old centre, dominated to the east by the pink marble façade of the Palazzo Senatorio, seat of the town hall. With its Baroque architecture, embellished with statues and columns, a balcony and two clocks separated by an imperial eagle, the palace adds a touch of opulence to the already exquisite 18th-century palaces that adorn the street. There are handicraft shops, culinary specialities and several lively cafés good for breakfast, a snack, a properly made Trapani granita, and which gradually come alive until they reach the vibrant time of the evening stroll.

Some of the most important churches also line the street. Immediately to the right is the Collegio church with its Baroque façade adorned with statues standing like caryatids. Next to it is the Jesuit college building, and further on is the Cathedral with a façade dating from 1740 and preceded by a portico. The street in front of the Cathedral leads to the 17th-century Church of the Purgatory, which houses the 20 statues carried in procession on Good Friday. At the far end of the corso is via Torrearsa, where you can stroll and be enchanted by the shop windows of the beautiful shops.
