Lazaretto

Overview

It is just opposite the fishing port. The island of Lazaretto can be observed well from the promenade of Viale Regina Giovanna or from the Tower of Ligny. The 19th-century lazaret was built on the island of St. Anthony, now joined to the mainland by a ballast, and as early as the 13th century was used to quarantine crews and goods before they could enter the city. Today it is home to the Italian Naval League and houses a small bar and restaurant. Behind the Lazzaretto, you can also see theColombaia island, which in the 14th century housed an octagonal tower, which in the following century was used as a fortress until the 17th century when it became a prison.
