Jesuit College Church

Overview

Built in the first half of the 17th century, it is a fine example of the exuberant Baroque of western Sicily, with a Mannerist façade with elegant columns and two caryatid-like statues of women on either side of the central window. The interior is simply splendid, looking like a jewellery box with its pink and gold ceilings and an array of marble works by the best chisellers of the time. To discover its treasures, one has to go all the way around it, including the pulpit supported by a pair of atlases and angels. Also not to be missed is the bas-relief under the dome of the altar, depicting the Immaculate Conception, and finally an alabaster statue of Saint Rosalie.
