Church of the Holy Souls in Purgatory

Overview

Erected in 1683, this small church overlooks Piazzetta Purgatorio and from the outside catches the gaze of passers-by and tourists alike for its beautiful façade on two orders, in an almost Borrominian style, adorned with statues of the Apostles, due to Giovanni Biagio Amico (1712). However, it is upon entering that one discovers why it is among the most significant places for the city of Trapani. Inside are the 20 sculptural groups commemorating the Passion of Christ, protagonists of the Good Friday procession. If the church is open, one can go in and ask the priest directly to explain the combination of the crafts and the sculptural groups and what the various figures represent, although many scenes appear familiar.
