Overview

Stunning rocky cliffs south of Syracuse

Crystal-clear waters, a rocky seabed and sheer cliffs. Just a few kilometres south of the Grand Harbour of Syracuse you can admire the picture-postcard views of the Maddalena Peninsula. If you're lucky, you will also be able to spot dolphins along this stretch of sea, which extends to the extreme tip of Capo Murro di Porco and is under the tutelage of the Plemmirio Marine Park.

Leaving behind the island of Ortigia, you'll need a pair of comfortable trainers to walk the trail, which starts in Punta della Mola and winds through cliffs with stunning views and the scent of aromatic herbs in the air.

After walking for about an hour, you'll come to the picturesque Cave of Pillirina, the perfect place to stop for a refreshing swim. Don't forget to bring your goggles and flippers! If you're fond of stalactites and stalagmites, you can enter this coastal karst cave, which is associated with a romantic tale of a young girl and a sailor.

Following the trail further south, you'll come to another perfect spot for a memorable photo opportunity: the Elephant Rock, which as the name suggests is reminiscent of the head of a pachyderm with its trunk overlooking the sea.
