Cefalù Castle

Overview

The image of Cefalù is inextricably linked to its majestic Rocca – about 270 metres high – which represents one of the best viewpoints to observe the village and the sea. Climbing the steps of the impressive ascent will take you almost to the top in about half an hour. A spectacular panorama opens up at high altitude: beyond the battlements appear the deep blue of the sea and the old town itself contemplated from above, with the yellow stones of the Cathedral. In addition to the magnificent view, you can also admire the remains of an ancient Temple of Diana. On the edge of the cliff are the remains, repeatedly remodelled, of a 12th-century castle, most likely of Byzantine origin. The Rocca has always produced the sedimentary rock that is found everywhere in the city, from the cobblestones of the streets to the facades of the churches. In Cefalù, they call it "la lumachella" (the little snail).
