Oratorio del SS. Rosario in Santa Cita

Overview

One crosses a late 16th-century double-order loggia on the left flank of the church of S. Cita to enter this oratory, entirely covered with magnificent stucco work by Giacomo Serpotta. Executed at various times from 1688 to 1718, they depict allegorical statues, putti planes, and small scenes from the Mysteries of the Rosary. On the entrance wall, not to be missed is the Battle of Lépanto, rich in minutely realised details, including the two emaciated children at the base, symbolising the consequences of the war. Along the walls line the pews of the brethren, inlaid with mother-of-pearl. On either side of the altar, with a Madonna of the Rosary by Carlo Maratta from 1695, one can admire the elegant Baroque choir stalls with figures of angels by Serpotta himself.
