Ficuzza Forest

Overview

The Ficuzza Forest is located in the Metropolitan City of Palermo and is one of the most important nature reserves in Sicily. From 1799, the area was a hunting reserve used by King Ferdinand of Bourbon, to whom we owe the construction of the Royal Hunting House that is located in the town of Ficuzza on the edge of the forest.  The reserve is characterised by the presence of different types of habitat, ranging from oak forests to Mediterranean scrub, up to the pastures and rocky altitudes of Rocca Busambra. The variety of its ecosystems makes the Ficuzza Forest a place of great landscape value, but above all a sanctuary of flora and fauna, especially for rare and threatened birds of prey. An ideal place for nature observation and scientific research. The forest is a popular destination for hikers, naturalists and photographers, thanks to the numerous paths that wind through the varied landscape and the historical value of the points of interest located in the area, such as the Pulpit of the King and the ancient coal mill
