Broom Door

Overview

Portella della Ginestra is a place that has profoundly marked the contemporary history of Sicily and Italy as a whole, known above all for the massacre that took place on 1 May 1947 to the detriment of the labourers who had gathered to celebrate Workers' Day and the outcome of the general elections. That day 11 people were killed and over 30 injured at the hands of the gang of the Sicilian bandit and independentist Salvatore Giuliano.Today, Portella della Ginestra is a place of memory, a symbol of resistance to the mafia and commitment to social justice. The site houses a monument dedicated to the victims perfectly integrated with the beauty and peace of the natural environment, a symbol of collective memory and an invitation to protect rights by overcoming ideological divisions.
