Aci Castello

Overview

The stacks, the promenade, the Lachea Island, everything at first glance makes us realise that Aci Castello is a village with a maritime soul. Here, where Giovanni Verga set his novel 'I Malavoglia', the essence has remained linked to the sea, to the life of fishermen and their ancient gestures that have always been repeated unchanged. Not to be missed are the Byzantine Castle perched on a cliff facing the sea and the Museo Casa del Nespolo, dedicated to Verga's novel. But to understand the maritime essence of Aci Castello, one must attend the traditional fish festival 'U pisci a mari'. Every year, during the celebrations of the patron saint, St. John the Baptist, this archaic and propitiatory rite is renewed, re-enacting the pantomime of swordfish fishing that used to take place in the Straits of Messina and recreating archaic and evocative atmospheres.
