Neptune's Grotto

Overview

An underground journey among stalactites and stalagmites

A few kilometres from Alghero, on the north-western slope of the Capo Caccia promontory, lies hidden one of Sardinia's many natural paradises: Grotta di Nettuno (Neptune's Grotto), a marvellous limestone cavern accessible to visitors via a long flight of 660 steps carved into the rock or, alternatively, by sea thanks to the Linea Grotte (Cave Line) service that departs from the nearby tourist port.

The fairy-tale itinerary that unfolds in the heart of the Capo Caccia promontory begins in a large cavern that houses the waters of Lake Lamarmora, one of the largest salt lakes in Europe, and continues through splendid caverns such as the Ruins, and the majestic Royal Palace, perhaps the most exciting site in the entire grotto, with imposing stalactites and stalagmites.

A little further on you enter the Smith Cavern dominated by the Great Organ, the largest column in the entire Grotto, and at the end of the tour you can enjoy the view offered by the Music Gallery, a panoramic balcony from which you can view Lake Lamarmora and the Reggia area from above.
