Sa Sartiglia: experiencing timeless emotion in Oristano Carnival

Overview

Traditional costumes, horses, race for the star, parades and ancient rituals: this is Sa Sartiglia. Sa Sartiglia is much more than a jousting tournament! History, tradition, folklore: these are just some of the aspects of this ancient tradition that bring Oristano to life. There is much more to it: there is emotion, sharing, and the pride of a people with a strong sense of belonging that thrives on shared experiences.

The first records of the ancient Sa Sartiglia date to the 15th century. The city, divided into two factions, the “Gremi dei Contadini” and “Gremi dei Falegnami” , challenge each other in the race for the Stars. The dressing of the leader of the race, “Su Componidori”, follows an ancient, almost religious ritual: young girls, “Massaieddas”, supervised by the “Massaia Manna”, sew the traditional clothing onto them. From the moment the rider finishes dressing, they can no longer put their feet on the ground and, from the table on which they have been dressed, they must mount their horse directly, not to dismount until the evening for the, equally exciting, undressing ritual.

During the two days of the event, processions and parades pass through the city and teams of horse riders perform acrobatic choreographies on their steeds

Sa Sartiglia is an event that embodies the past and helps us understand, in the present, the visceral love that binds us to the land and its traditions.
