Piazza Satta

Overview

A historic place in the city of Nuoro, Piazza Satta unites two of the most significant personalities of the 20th century: named after a great Nuoro poet and designed by one of the island's greatest artists.

In 1965, the sculptor Costantino Nivola, fresh from his American experience in contact with architects such as Le Corbusier and Saarinen, was commissioned by the Nuoro municipality to design a monument to celebrate Sebastiano Satta's poetry.

Two years later, the square took on its almost metaphysical appearance: the buildings were painted white, the pavement covered with squared slabs and large blocks of granite were placed in their natural state, in which statuettes were set, first in terracotta then bronze in the final version, embodying the poet's personality in different attitudes and different moments of life.

An important connecting point between different neighbourhoods, Piazza Satta does not have a privileged vantage point, but from whichever point you arrive in the square, there is a different and always fascinating perspective.
