Chiesa Madre di San Giacomo Maggiore

Overview

The Church of St James the Great is one of the most recognisable symbols of Orosei. The churchyard occupies a raised square, which can be accessed from the central Piazza del Popolo via a wide staircase.

The parish church was constructed in the 14th century, but presents itself to us in its Baroque form following extension and renovation work in the 17th and 19th centuries. The white 18th-century façade adorns the right side of the structure, topped by a large dome behind which the bell tower rises, while the interior is extensively adorned with gilded stucco. The building houses several wooden works of sacred art, including a 17th-century sculpture of San Giacomo Maggiore and a precious baptistery of the seventeenth century.Dedicated to the patron saint of Orosei, the church is at the centre of the patronal celebrations held every year on 25 July.
