Church of Sant'Antonio Abate

Overview

The church of S. Antonio Abate is located in the Palatzos Betzos district, one of the most characteristic corners of the historic centre of Orosei. It achieved its current form between the 14th and 15th centuries, following a series of extensive restoration. The reconstruction work is apparent from the first glance at the façade, where the irregular arrangement of the volcanic stone blocks reveals the previous Romanesque structure. Inside are 14th-century frescoes and a wooden statue of Sant'Antonio Abate. Spectacular fire-related celebrations are dedicated to the saint in January, which take place in the church courtyard and are deeply appreciated by the local community. Guarding the courtyard is a solitary mediaeval tower, a survivor of the ancient Pisan fortifications. The church is still a place of great importance for the faithful, who in the past would gather in the adjacent cumbessias for celebrations.
