Church of St Leonard

Overview

A tiny church in dark trachyte: S. Leonardo was built around the middle of the 12th century in Romanesque-Pisan forms and from the second half of the 13th century belonged to the order of the Knights of St John of Jerusalem. What gave it its present, Romanesque-Gothic appearance, however, was a renovation that probably took place in the early 14th century. Of the primitive layout it retains the left flank, part of the apse and the lower section of the façade. The bell gable and the two portals of the façade are decorated with sculptures. It was also the site of a hospital where Guelfo della Gherardesca, surviving son of Count Ugolino of Dante's memory, died in 1295.
