Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception

Overview

Recognisable by its characteristic small domes and sturdy trachyte bell tower, Bosa Cathedral was rebuilt in the early 19th century by Bosan architect Salvatore Are, after having already been remodelled in the 15th-16th centuries. The façade, between Piedmontese Baroque and Neoclassical, is divided into two orders by a strong cornice. The interior develops longitudinally in a spacious hall and at the end of the choir rises the octagonal dome, decorated in 1877 by Emilio Scherer, who also painted the frescoes in the apse basin and those on the sides of the presbytery. The wooden choir and sacristy furniture, made in 1803, are also interesting. On the tribune, an organ from the Spanish De Orqueña factory, inaugurated in 1810 and restored several times. The Treasury (main sacristy) holds some remarkable pieces of silverware, including a precious 16th-century reliquary of the Cagliari school.
