Montessu Necropolis

Overview

On the Montessu hill, in the municipality of Villaperuccio, is the important Montessu Neolithic archaeological site . The Montessu necropolis is one of the largest pre-nuragic sites in Sardinia, and is inside an archaeological park. It is home to many "domus de janas", or "fairy houses", of different shapes and sizes. Originally, the structures had stone doors. On some of them, you can still see the engravings and embossed reliefs symbolising the two main deities of the pre-nuragic world: the Mother goddess and the god Taurus.

Perhaps the most unique features are the large sanctuary tombs, also dating back to a pre-Nuragic era. They had the same function as a church does today. When the Nuraghi people settled here, the tombs were converted into houses. It is said that this took place in 2000 BC, long before the Etruscans and Romans.
