Marina di Villaputzu

Overview

Between natural and cultural attractions

In the most easterly part of the province of South Sardinia, precisely inSarrabus , lies the locality of Villaputzu.

The town is characterised by its distinctive stone houses and old streets, walking through which you will feel as if you have stepped back in time. Around the mouth of the Flumendosa, sandy beaches alternatewith promontories and inlets.

A few kilometres away is the modern Porto Corallo, a tourist area in which there is the Marina di Villaputzu, which can accommodate up to 400 boats of up to 30 metres in length, and over which rises, imposingly, the 16th century Aragonese tower. Equally enchanting is Porto Tramatzu, with its fine sand blending into the Mediterranean scrub.

The Villaputzu area is a paradise for lovers of birdwatching, as it is surrounded by alluvial plains full of ponds, the favourite habitat of mallards, pink flamingos and sultan chickens. Under the rays of the sun and just a few steps from the sea, there are also picturesque routes for trekking and biking. And, amidst the dense woods, are hidden ruins of industrial archaeology, including the Baccu Locci mine, caves and tunnels filled with stalactites and stalagmites that entice one to hike.
