Aidomaggiore

Overview

The village of Aidomaggiore rises on a slight rise, surrounded by woods and protected from the fast-running winds that stir the clouds. Its ancient foundation is testified by the nuraghi that dot the territory, while its more recent history weaves handicrafts and tradition: here the art of weaving reigns supreme and the skilful hands of the craftsmen have been producing carpets, bertulas, blankets and tapestries with elegant designs for centuries. There is a time of year when the village is transformed and lets the rituals of the past fill the atmosphere: it is Carnival, 'su carrasegare'. The streets of Aidomaggiore are lined with the Maschera a Lenzolu and on Shrove Tuesday everything is coloured black, a sign of mourning for the end of Carnival but also for the fate of the puppet King Zorzi who, after spending the whole day in the streets of the village, is tried and set on fire: this is the rite of passage that marks the end of winter and the beginning of spring.
