Zollino

Overview

When one enters Zollino, one is fascinated by the particular sounds that the local dialect takes on: here, in fact, along with the other villages of the Grecìa Salentina, the Griko, an ancient Hellenic dialect, is still spoken. The roots of this town are also linked to a legend: Zollino, so the story goes, was founded by the inhabitants of the ancient hamlet of Apigliano fleeing from vipers. If the traces of the most ancient past are still perfectly visible - the menhir of the Station is the symbol par excellence, but the 'pozzelle', ancient water collection wells, are also characteristic - the present is a feast of colours and flavours: the town's countryside is generous, rich and fertile, and the typical product is the dwarf pea, to which the town has even dedicated a monument in Lecce stone.
