Turi

Overview

Turi is located on the Murgia plateau and its oldest centre is perched on the highest part of the town and tells of its Mediterranean roots in the elements that make it up, from the whitewashed houses to the narrow streets and votive shrines. Strolling through the historic centre and letting your gaze wander in search of the most fascinating streets and buildings, you will surely stop enchanted in front of the Palazzo Marchesale, once the castle of the Moles, but also the Chiesa Madre of the XII century dedicated to the Santa Maria Assunta, the convent and the church of San Giovanni Battista with the Clock Tower next to it. But Turi is also known for its ties with two important historical figures: it hosted Antonio Gramsci and Sandro Pertini in its prison during the years of Fascism.
