Torricella

Overview

The history of the village of Torricella is intertwined with the vicissitudes of the place: in fact, it is said that the settlement was founded when a group of farmers and shepherds, fleeing from the attacks of the pirates that were pouring in on the Ionian coast, fled inland, finding a safe haven here. Even today, life in the village is still linked to the land and its ancient gestures. The village surrounds its mighty manor house, characterised by its five towers, which still retains a typical 16th-century appearance despite having undergone several restorations. Outside the village, on the other hand, is the Crypt of the Holy Trinity, which can be reached by a walk of about three kilometres, among farms and olive groves: inside there is still a small altar, adorned with a canvas depicting the miracle of the shepherdess Ceci.
