Torre A Mare

Overview

The small seaside village of Torre a Mare, a hamlet of the city of Bari, has always written its history by looking at the sea, letting this element permeate its borders, sculpt its shapes, draw its soul and essence. Its centre is gathered around a 16th-century tower that stands majestic and austere in the centre of a square, overlooking the port. The history of this tower derives precisely from the sea: to defend the coast from attacks by pirates and marauders who struck the settlements from the sea, this watchtower was built to protect the town and its inhabitants. Over time, Torre a Mare became a village of fishermen, who repaired their boats in the small harbour at the mouth of Lama Giotta, and this soul that lives in symbiosis with the sea has never left; it continues to permeate the spirit of the town, to accompany every gesture of its inhabitants.
