Castro

Overview

Castro is an ancient village: the town is in fact heir to the Roman Castrum Minervae and, over the centuries, has always maintained its importance, becoming one of the first towns in Salento to be elevated to county status. The city, perched on a cliff overlooking the Adriatic Sea, has a very strong bond with this strong and magnetic element: the sea permeates its identity and represents its beauty, thanks to its marina, which has been awarded the Blue Flag title. Castro is a city of the sea, but also a city of myths and legends: in the heart of the village stands the Aragonese castle, the fulcrum of life and activities in past centuries, where tradition is intertwined with history... it was here that the statuette of Athena Phrygia was found, proof of the existence of a temple dedicated to the goddess Minerva, a temple that Aeneas, fleeing from Troy, praised before he landed.
