Santa Maria Assunta Cathedral

Overview

In the historic centre of Andria, the Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta preserves few remains of the original Romanesque construction, built in the 12th century on a previous church (9th–10th centuries) that now serves as an apsidal crypt, due to the 1438–65 reconstruction and subsequent reworkings. The bell tower (dating from the 12th to 14th centuries), with single and mullioned windows, is crowned with a cusp. Inside is preserved the Holy Thorn, believed to be taken from the crown of Christ, a gift from Beatrice of Anjou; in the crypt, remains of two tombs, indicated as those of Yolande of Brienne and Isabella of England, wives of Frederick II.
