Castellana Caves

Overview

Spectacular stalactites and stalagmites and other limestone formations make up a scenario of rare beauty in the Castellana Caves. In 1938, when the Lodi-based speleologist Franco Anelli discovered this abyss, he believed it was endless. And indeed, it is 60 metres deep in the cavity of the Grave, which is reached by a long flight of steps (one ascends by lift) at the end of which is the Cyclops stone group. Inside the caves , there are two routes to choose from, a short one of about one km and 50 minutes and the other of 3 km for about two hours. The route touches the Black Cave, the Monuments and Owl Caves, the Precipice and Altar Caves. Through the long corridor of the Desert you can discover other formations called the Cathedral of Milan with the Madonna and the Tower of Pisa, until reaching the apex of amazement right at the end: the White Grotto is an alabaster environment of incredible shine. Guided tours are organised by the Speleological Museum dedicated to Anelli and the Sirius Astronomical Observatory, 1.5 km from Castellana Grotte.
