The Belvedere Modugno viewpoint

Overview

A tribute to Polignano’s most famous resident

You can’t visit Polignano a Mare without paying homage to its most illustrious resident, Domenico Modugno, among the most famous Italian singer-songwriters of all time, who was born there in 1928. In 2009, the city dedicated a bronze statue to him, approximately three metres high, by sculptor Hermann Mejer. It stands on the seafront, facing the town with its back to the beach.

Be sure to stop by and look at the face of this musical genius, gazing at his town with open arms, holding it in a timeless embrace. You can almost hear him singing “Volare, oh oh” once again.

Just behind the monument, a flight of steps will take you down to a rocky terrace from which you can admire Lama Monachile, Polignano’s most famous cove, and the white houses of the old town from a unique perspective.
