Varallo

Overview

Along the banks of the Sesia we find Varallo, divided in two by the Mastallone stream that separates the historical centre, known as Varallo Vecchio, from the more recent areas. Varallo, the historical and cultural capital of Valsesia, is immersed in the green of the Special Nature Reserve, which dominates the town centre. The town preserves a great artistic wealth, including many works by the 16th-century painter Gaudenzio Ferrari and his pupils, including the polyptych housed in the collegiate church of San Gaudenzio and the fresco in the church of Santa Maria delle Grazie. Experiencing Varallo also means taking part in its traditional events, such as "Valsesia Musica", which gives visibility to young musical talents, and the "l'Alpàa" (alpine festival) market-exhibition, featuring typical local products, handicrafts and gastronomic specialities.
