Orridi di Uriezzo

Overview

The Antigorio valley contains a breathtaking spectacle: gorges cut into the rock by the constant pressure of streams flowing along the bed of the Toce glacier, which once ran through the valley. The stream bed is now accessible on foot, even by children. As you descend into these deep gorges and caves, you feel as though you are entering the bowels of the earth, where the vegetation is almost tropical, filtering the light reflected on the smooth rocks. The high humidity and lack of light here has created an ecosystem of mosses and ferns, which proliferate on the rocky walls. There are three canyons to explore: the South Gorge, 200 m long and up to 30 m deep, which is considered the most beautiful and spectacular; the North-East Gorge, about 100 m long and 10 m deep, but with some very narrow passages, and finally the West Gorge, the least picturesque and recommended for more experienced cavers. From the South Gorge, a 10-minute walk through the woods takes you to another natural phenomenon, the Giants' Cauldrons. These are rock formations with cavities eroded by the River Toce, with a sequence of whirlpools, steep slopes, mini waterfalls and pools of crystal-clear water.
