Sanctuary of St Bernard

Overview

Fra Dolcino, the heretical friar mentioned by Dante Alighieri in the Divine Comedy, took refuge in the Middle Ages in the Biellese mountains, those of Trivero, to escape the inquisitors. These mountains were the scene of the battle that Fra Dolcino lost and which earned him the stake. Tradition has it that the sanctuary of St. Bernard, on the Mount Rubello, at an altitude of 1400 metres, was built in the 14th century in just 50 hours and with material salvaged from Dolcinian fortifications to celebrate the victory over Fra Dolcino. What is certain is that the view from the sanctuary is truly breathtaking.
