Former Maurizio Sella Woollen Mill

Overview

Today, the Maurizio Sella Woollen Mill is home to some of the offices of Banca Sella and, in its oldest building, the Sella Foundation, which preserves the precious archived collections of the Sella family from the early 17th century and a substantial photographic collection. But the former woollen mill is also a splendid example of industrial archaeology.

The complex consists of several buildings facing the river and the street. Partly covered by an iron truss roof, the inner courtyard is overlooked by buildings formerly used as dwellings, including that of Quintino Sella. The weaving mill was housed in a five-storey building from 1867. Each floor was dedicated to one of the processing stages, which were carried out from bottom to top: on the first floor there was washing, beating, carding, roughing and dyeing, on the second floor coarse spinning, combing and finishing, on the third floor fine spinning, and on the fourth and fifth floors weaving.
