St Stephen's Cathedral

Overview

The Cathedral of Biella, named after S. Stefano Protomartire, is at the centre of the geography of the town of Biella, positioned as it is opposite the town hall and a stone's throw from via Italia, the town's main shopping street.

Just one look at the distinctive neo-Gothic façade (added at the beginning of the 19th century) will show that a visit to Biella's cathedral will provide unexpected surprises. Inside, an astonishing expanse of colour fills the eyes with the shapes, characters and images on the walls and ceilings, which are entirely frescoed.

Equally striking are the slender bell tower of the cathedral, separated from the central body, and the ancient baptistery, on the left side of the cathedral, rightly counted among the most significant examples of pre-Romanesque architecture in Piedmont.
