San Benedetto Po

Overview

The village of San Benedetto Po rises a few kilometres from Mantua and its history has always been intertwined with what is its symbol, its cultural and spiritual heart: the Polirone Abbey. In fact, in ancient times, the village was called San Benedetto in Polirone, due to the presence of the Benedictine monastery founded in 1007 by Tedaldo di Canossa on the island that stood between the Po and Lirone rivers. The village developed over time along the banks of the river around this monastic complex, which is still today a place of religious tourism and pilgrimage, but also a destination for art lovers for its cultural and architectural value. All around, the river and the Lombardy countryside, a green plain waiting to be discovered.
