Between the late 19th century and the early decades of the 20th century, the Brembana Valley, in the province of Bergamo, experienced a period of intense transformation driven by industrial development that accelerated economic and social changes. A transition also told by the faces, glances and gestures captured by photography.
From this visual memory comes Portrait of an Era. Photographs by Eugenio Goglio (1865–1926), an exhibition promoted and organised by the Municipality of Bergamo and the Museo delle Storie di Bergamo, open to the public from 11 April 2026 to 19 July 2026 at the Sestini Museum of Photography, in the Convent of San Francesco in Bergamo.
The exhibition is supported by the SIAD Fondazione Sestini with the contribution of the Province of Bergamo and the Consorzio del Bacino Imbrifero Montano del Lago di Como e fiumi Brembo e Serio.
The star of the exhibition, curated by Roberta Frigeni, Nicholas Fiorina and Daniela Pacchiana of the Museo delle Storie di Bergamo, is Eugenio Goglio (1865–1926), a multifaceted figure from the Brembana Valley, on the centenary of his death.
Eugenio Goglio, born in Piazza Brembana and trained in Milan at the Brera Academy and the Scuola Superiore d'Arte Applicata alle Industrie, returned to the valley in 1889 where, alongside his artistic activity, he became "the" photographer of the area. His distinctive style was the portrait: single, couple, group, in the studio or outdoors, always with attention to the smallest detail, like a set. The portrait thus becomes not only an artistic expression, but also a tool for anthropological and social investigation, at a time when the natural geography of the valley was showing the first signs of 20th-century anthropisation.
