The great success of Cammini Aperti, an initiative aimed at enhancing Italy’s walking routes, involved the entire country in 2024, becoming the largest national event dedicated to Italy’s Ways. This achievement has paved the way for a new experience, focusing on the Ways of Emilia-Romagna, Lazio, Marche, Tuscany, and Umbria.
This year’s edition is centered around the 2025 Jubilee, with a special focus on the Franciscan Centenaries of 2026. The Ways at the heart of the project are:
● The Lauretani Ways – An ancient Marian pilgrimage route that connects three of Italy’s most important religious sites: the Sanctuary of the Holy House of Loreto in Marche, the Basilica of St. Francis in Assisi, Umbria, and the Franciscan Convent of Le Celle in Cortona, Tuscany. The route continues to Siena, where it links with the Via Francigena.
● The Way of St. Benedict – A journey through medieval villages and historic abbeys rich in spirituality, crossing Umbria and Lazio. This route connects the main abbeys and sacred places associated with St. Benedict, the Patron Saint of Europe.
● The St. Francis' Way – Starting from Florence in Tuscany and Rimini in Emilia-Romagna, this Way crosses Tuscany, Emilia-Romagna, Umbria, and Lazio, following in the footsteps of St. Francis of Assisi, the patron saint of Italy. The journey leads through the Sacred Valley of Rieti, Assisi, and finally reaches Rome.
CAMMINI APERTI 2025
The event will take place over the weekend of May 10-11, 2025, with each Way featuring three representative hikes per region crossed, for a total of 27 events in Emilia-Romagna, Lazio, Marche, Tuscany, and Umbria.
Additionally, the initiative aims to allow visits to symbolic locations of great significance, both religious and spiritual, along the entire route. These places, one per region, are usually closed to the public and will be specially opened for the event.
The project's objective is to create a national event that allows for the discovery and promotion of the featured Ways, as well as other points of interest along the routes. It is important to highlight the values of the journey, as these hikes will introduce walkers and pilgrims to one of the following themes:
- Accessibility: the events will promote the values of inclusion and accessibility through collaboration with specialized associations.
- Spirituality: this initiative aims to offer an experience of connection, both in religious terms, as an encounter with the sacred, and as a personal journey of introspection, inner growth, and self-challenge.
- Environmental sustainability: the stages will be designed to pass through areas of great natural value, with the goal of highlighting biodiversity and offering participants an immersive experience in close contact with nature.
