Isola Superiore o dei Pescatori

Overview

The island with a mention by Hemingway

Isola Superiore, or Isola dei Pescatori, is the most picturesque of the Borromean archipelago. Mentioned by Ernest Hemingway in his novel A Farewell to Arms, this little pearl of Lake Maggiore is characterised by its narrow alleys and houses with long balconies used for drying fish. Pottery shops and inns serving the catch of the day are scattered about its narrow streets.

On Isola dei Pescatori, time seems to stand still. The tall bell tower of the Church of San Vittore stands amidst the red-coloured roofs. The building, dating back to the year 1000, was entirely rebuilt between the 17th and 18th centuries and is rich in frescoes. Behind the church stands the small fishermen's cemetery, with model boats found on the tombstones.

Treat yourself to pleasant walks in the shade of the sycamores or, if the season allows, dive into the cool waters of the lake for a refreshing swim.

Among the traditional festivities, the one held for Ferragosto is particularly evocative: you can watch the procession of illuminated boats that go around the island paying homage to the statue of the Virgin on the 15th of August.
