Lake Verzegnis

Overview

From Tolmezzo, provincial road 1 heads into the Carnic Pre-Alps towards Sella Chianzutan, meeting after less than five kilometres Chialuis and, shortly afterwards, the large artificial lake created since the 1950s by an imposing dam on the course of the Ambiesta stream. To get an idea of Lake Verzegnis from the best vantage point on the road, you can leave the provincial road at Chiaicis, taking via Ambiesta.
Here the places are absolutely out of the way, off the main communication routes, and totally immersed in the silence of nature. Although diving is not allowed, because after all the purposes of the reservoir are hydroelectricity, walking or cycling among the green and blue along the paths by the lake, and perhaps fishing for trout, are more than advisable activities.
Continuing after via Ambiesta over the road bridge crossing the lake, borgata Dueibis passes the small church of S. Pietro and heads, though no longer by car, towards the abandoned village of Pusea. A sign reads: "Welcome to Pusea, land of enchantment/Nobody is happy to leave". Other picturesque locations in the Verzegnis area are Santo Stefano, Fuignis, Riviasio and Pozzis.
North of Chialuis, in the hamlet of Villa di Verzegnis, the contemporary art park created by publisher and collector Egidio Marzona is remarkable. Among the greats that Marzona has invited here to create a work are Bruce Neuman, Richard Long, Sol Lewitt, Mario Merz and Michelangelo Pistoletto.
