Lake Avostanis

Overview

Driving towards the lake along state road 52 bis - which connects Tolmezzo with the Monte Croce Carnico Pass and Austria - you reach the village of Laipacco in the municipality of Paluzza, and follow the signs to Malga Pramosio. Higher up, through the forest, the asphalt turns into the dirt road, steep in places, which leads to the car park of the Casera Pramosio refuge, at an altitude of 1521. From here to Lake Avostanis, a couple of hours' walk is guided by the CAI 402 signpost.
After about twenty minutes, you are near the Giovanni Morgante-Casera Malpasso Refuge, which belongs to the Friuli Venezia Giulia Region Forestry Corps. In the area there is still a silver mine that was used in the Middle Ages and two disused quarries where marmots can also be encountered amidst steps and yards partly covered by vegetation. A plaque commemorates the Carnic carrier Maria Plozner Mentil, who fell during the Great War while bringing supplies to the front line.
The trail continues to the Casera Pramosio Alta shelter, at an altitude of 1940, along the shore of Lake Avostanis and at the base of a limestone wall used as a climbing wall. From the lake, the route ascends over the two-thousand-metre Cima Avostanis. In the vicinity, numerous remains of military posts have remained for more than a century.
