Sacile

Overview

Walking around Sacile, about fifteen kilometres from Pordenone, means crossing bridges, peering into canals, and walking among the trees along the water. At the heart of the town, on one of the two islands that make up the historic centre, is Piazza del Popolo, with the loggia of the fifteenth-century Town Hall and a sequence of farmhouses where the families of the owners traded agricultural products.

From the square, Viale Zancanaro crosses a canal leading to the majesty of the sixteenth-century Palazzo Ragazzoni, a splendid building featuring frescoes by a pupil of Paolo Veronese. From the square, Via Garibaldi proceeds between 18th-century buildings to the former 15th-century church of San Gregorio, which is now used for cultural events. Via Pietà, on the other hand, crosses the Livenza river, encountering the 17th-century Church of the Pietà, with a remarkable stone sculpture of the Vesperbild type, characteristic of central Europe, inside.

The small church across the river is already located in the second of the two islands of the historic centre, that of the religious centre. Palazzo Carli and Palazzo Ovio Gobbi accompany the cathedral and its bell tower from the second half of the 16th century. The church had already been built a few decades earlier, but today it is best known for its doorway and the imposing twentieth-century frescoes in the presbytery, all by Veronese artist Pino Casarini. Among the naves there are older paintings, such as a Madonna of the Rosary by Palma il Giovane and a Madonna and Saints by Francesco Bassano.
