Meduno

Overview

The penchant of Friulians to find a speciality in which to establish themselves on a global scale has settled in Meduno on stone processing. Here the stonemasons are the "tajapiera": it was one of them, Luigi Del Bianco, who was the master builder in the gigantic sculpture of the faces of four US presidents on Mount Rushmore, South Dakota, in the 1930s. Another speciality, although actually quite widespread in the region, is wine production.

Meduno hosts precious works of art, such as the extraordinary altarpiece, Madonna and Child with Saints by the Venetian Giovanni Battista Piazzetta which stands here, at the church of S. Maria Maggiore and San Pellegrino in the hamlet of Navarons. If you want to continue towards the mountains beyond Navarons, you would set off along the Val Tramontina and discover its lakes.

Much more unique than in the case of the "tajapiera" Del Bianco was the speciality of the most famous citizen in Sequàls. A genuine individual talent was born here in 1906: Primo Carnera, one of the most legendary sporting figures of the 20th century, world heavyweight boxing champion in 1933. In what used to be his villa, rooms and memories can be visited, with a documentary to conclude.
