Duino

Overview

The ancient village of Duino/Devin is located between the southern slope of Mount Ermada/Grmada and the white cliffs plunging into the Adriatic Sea. The romantic ruins of the old castle, the imposing bulk of the new castle with its halls, park, bunker and breathtaking panorama make up this beautiful village. The manor house, inhabited by the Princes della Torre and Tasso, can be visited, also with its elegant garden. Charming is the ulca, the narrow alley that leads from the church along the walls of the castle surrounded by picturesque houses. Then there is the small harbour, Dante's islet, the Cernizza/Črničje forest criss-crossed by paths leading to the paleontological site and the source of the Timavo/Timava River. The Duino Cliffs Nature Reserve, within which the Rilke Promenade winds its way, makes this seaside village a tourist destination that remains imprinted in the hearts and minds of visitors.
