Scandiano

Overview

The County of Boiardo

Scandiano is a municipality in the province of Reggio Emilia that boasts a "noble" title of other times, that of county. Do not expect ladies and knights in its streets but know that in 1423 the Counts Boiardo, feudal lords of the Este, settled as governors. In the family tree of this historic family you will have your eye on the name of Matteo Maria Boiardo, author of the famous epic chivalric poem L'Orlando Innamorato.

There are numerous places where you can make a stop, from the ancient Rocca to the equally characteristic Piazza Spallanzani, Scandianese doc and father of experimental biology. Let the local guides tell you the anecdotes related to the village: there will be no shortage of attempts at poisoning, adulteries and great art commissions of the Boiardo family.

The town also has significant traditions in the field of sport. If you follow the Giro d 'Italia you will have already seen the riders fight in 2023 along the route to Viareggio, in the stage started for the first time right from Scandiano.

And for a sweet break? In some pastry shops in Scandiano look for the famous Boiardo cake, or Scandiano cake, an ancient recipe that is a joy for the palate.
