Sassofeltrio

Overview

The small municipality of Sassofeltrio rises at an altitude of about 400 metres, on top of a rock and is guarded and protected by a curtain of walls, which today are, for inhabitants and travellers, the equivalent of a belvedere from which to look out and enjoy the surrounding hilly landscape. A stronghold of the Malatesta family of Rimini between the 13th and 14th centuries, it came under the rule of the Montefeltro family in the early 15th century. The only trace of this past is what remains of the imposing fortress commissioned by Federico da Montefeltro and which replaced the castle previously built by the Malatesta family. The old town centre, despite its predominantly modern appearance, nevertheless retains a mediaeval soul, particularly in its narrow streets and some particular views.
