Perticara

Overview

Perticara, a hamlet of Novafeltria, is a small village that lies 650 metres above sea level on the slopes of Mount Aquilone, in a characteristic geological and naturalistic context.

The town is known for being home to Europe's largest sulphur mine, which was closed in 1964 and of which the Sulphur Historical Mining Museum remains today, an important example of industrial archaeology that documents the millennia-old local mining activity thanks to the rich heritage of artefacts located in the original rooms.

Perticara is undoubtedly an ideal destination for lovers of open-air activities, owing to the presence of numerous marked trails winding through the Perticara, Pincio and Aquilone mountains, which can be followed on foot or by mountain bike, climbing walls and a hang-gliding launching point. Monte Aquilone is also home to the Skypark adventure park, the interesting Parco dei Luoghi Minimi, created by Tonino Guerra, and the CAI 096 trail, which leads to the summit from which there is a magnificent panorama over much of the Marecchia Valley. The relationship between Perticara and the subsoil does not end with sulphur mining: the village is, in fact, a centre for the production of fossa cheese and other cave-aged products.
