Battistero degli Ariani

Overview

Built by the Gothic king Teodoric (493-526), the Arian Baptistery was originally planned as the baptistery of the Arian Cathedral, now known as the Church of the Holy Spirit. During the reign of Archbishop Agnello, it was brought back to Orthodox worship and later dedicated to the Virgin Mary.
With an octagonal plan, it houses precious mosaics on the inside, representing a procession of Apostles around a central medallion with the Baptism of Christ. It is recognised by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site.
