The Basilica of Sant’Apollinare Nuovo

Overview

Mosaics in the heart of Ravenna

The Basilica of Sant’Apollinare Nuovo is a must when visiting Ravenna. It is among the oldest and most important churches in the city, in the heart of its historic centre. Dating to the 6th century, it was commissioned by King Theodoric as an Arian church, but was consecrated to Catholic worship in 561. It has a simple, elegant façade, while the interior is steeped in a solemn and evocative atmosphere.

The most important works of art inside include the mosaics depicting episodes from the life of Christ and Saint Apollinaris. The mosaic in the apse depicts Christ surrounded by twelve lambs, symbolising the twelve apostles.

Near the Basilica are numerous other places of historical and cultural interest, including the Mausoleum of Theodoric, an imposing funeral monument built in honour of King Theodoric. Ravenna is also known for its many monuments and archaeological sites, including the famous Basilica of San Vitale and the Arian Baptistry. All in all, the Basilica of Sant’Apollinare Nuovo is a must-see destination for anyone who wants to dive into the heart of Ravenna and immerse themselves in its thousand-year-old history. The beauty of its mosaics and its unique atmosphere will make for an unforgettable experience.
