Monticelli Terme: a break from stress just a stone's throw from the city
If the hectic pace of everyday life is stressing you out and you need a break, we recommend visiting Monticelli Terme.
This renowned spa is just 15 kilometres from Parma and welcomes you to a modern spa with a vast range of wellness packages and therapeutic treatments to choose from.
All this lies within an old Art Nouveau-style establishment, which is well worth a visit in itself.
The Spa and the ancient building
In the municipality of Montechiarugolo, between the plain and the hills south-east of Parma, lies the hamlet of Monticelli Terme. This well-equipped tourist centre has been a renowned spa resort since the 1920s, set in a 25-hectare park.
The historic building is named “Terme Borrini” after Borrini, the owner of vast swathes of land in the area, who discovered the thermal springs by chance while drilling a well, from which salt water gushed out. He immediately set about building a monumental establishment with soft, Art Nouveau lines, surrounded by rows of linden and oak trees. In this fairy-tale setting, you can enjoy moments of total relaxation, thanks to a varied offer of thermal baths.
Curative water treatments
The sodium chloride, bromide and iodide-rich waters and sulphur waters are the beating heart of the Monticelli spa.
The first type of water is known for its anti-stress properties, while the second is known for a broad range of therapeutic treatments, ranging from inhalations and nasal irrigations to baths with and without whirlpool jets.
Within the modern facility you will find areas that specialise in the treatment of respiratory and musculoskeletal disorders.
The spa hosts three gyms, where you can take part in rehabilitation programmes, as well as a walking path that alternates between hot and cold pools.
You will also find a treatment centre for vasculopathies and one specialising in rhinogenic deafness.
The Beauty SPA Line and thermal pools
To help you leave your stress behind and regenerate with beauty treatments, you have the Beauty SPA Line: relaxing massages, facial and body treatments, and saunas in thermal grottos, for moments of pure well-being. Or why not let yourself be pampered by the Tepidarium and the Jacuzzis in the solarium that overlooks the park?
The three thermal pools are another major attraction, with three different temperatures to meet every need.
If you enjoy exercising, you can try your hand at hydrobiking in the Pool of Roses or swim against the current in the Park Pool. Or, if you prefer to indulge in the pleasures of whirlpools, then you can head for the semi-circular tub inspired by Roman baths: with eight jets and two geysers, it promises to be a real treat for the feet and spine.
Nearby places of interest
In the Spa Park, in addition to the beautiful Art Nouveau-style building, you can admire the Gothic Revival Tempietto di San Giulio; with its steep roof and stone cladding, it houses two bronze sculptures by Pietro Carnerini.
Other notable features include the neoclassical Church of San Donnino Martire and the magnificent Villa Mariotti Micheli, probably built on the remains of a 15th-century castle.
Monticelli Terme is also crossed by the gentle Ham and Wines of the Hills route, offering countless local delicacies to savour.
Lastly, don’t miss the itinerary of the Castles of the Duchy: over 20 charming fortresses in the ancient lands of the Duchy of Parma and Piacenza, including the one in Montechiarugolo, just 5 kilometres from Monticelli Terme.
