Dozza

Overview

Orange Flag of the Italian Touring Club

On foot or by bicycle, it's a pleasure to wander around the surroundings of Dozza, between cultivated fields and small wooded areas between the Po Valley and the Apennines, possibly following the Wine Trail, the S. Antonio Trail, and the Via dei Gessi e dei Calanchi. But it is especially the historic center of the village that amazes: the medieval architectural fabric has been preserved, making it an open-air art gallery, with over 200 murals decorating the town, a testimony to the Biennale del Muro Dipinto, an event that has been leaving new masterpieces in the area since the 1960s. The impressive Rocca Sforzesca is also worth a visit, with its Museum full of artworks and historical furnishings, a monumental dragon, and the headquarters of the Emilia-Romagna Regional Wine Cellar, featuring hundreds of prestigious wine labels. Also noteworthy is the Church of Santa Maria Assunta in Piscina and the Centro Studi Tolkieniani "La Tana del Drago", the only one in the world dedicated to J.R.R. Tolkien, the author of The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings.

Typical wines include Albana DOCG and Sangiovese DOC, which pair well with the traditional handmade pasta by the arzdore. Among the major events, in addition to the Biennale del Muro Dipinto, we highlight: Fantastika (Biennale of art and illustration of the fantastic), the Festa delle Arzdore dedicated to traditional cuisine, and the Festa del Vino, with numerous wineries from Dozza and neighboring towns.
